dorm decor on a budget.

Before I even stepped foot into my first dorm Freshman year of college I already knew just how to decorate it. My personal style is kinda chic gold/basic/functional; it’s honestly weird. Pinterest is where I started getting ideas last year but some stuff on there is just too expensive (especially on minimum wage). My first attempt at decorating last year was pretty rough, but now I have a better idea of how to decorate my Sophomore dorm. Here are some of my tips and tricks for getting a cute dorm on a budget!

string lights.

For lighting that is Instagram quality, I suggest buying a cheap 50-100 count strand of white or colored string lights from the Christmas or outdoor lighting section. I bought mine at Wal-Mart after Christmas and I got the ones that don’t get hot so there’s no chance of them popping. PRECAUTION: If you buy actual bulb-shaped lights they are more expensive and end up getting broken. Don’t do it. It’s a waste of money and time (Sorry, Mom). Total cost: about $5

wall décor.

If you’re into recycling, this is perfect for you. I always used to get super cute calendars every year for my room at home but felt bad throwing them away the top part or the picture could still be reused. I had a “Keep Calm And Carry On” calendar that I decided to use as wall décor; I simply just cut out the pictures and used poster tape to hang them. Total cost: recycled ($0) + tape ($3)

Give your room a homey touch by adding a collage of photos or just a simple picture in a frame. Personally, I bought a package of plastic frames and painted them with art supplies. I like to have a picture of my big family in my room because it reminds me that I’m never really alone in the city. Total cost: frames ($5-10) + art supplies ($5) + picture (priceless)

dry-erase calendar.

This is an essential; my college schedule is constantly changing so I need a calendar that can keep up. Organized? Check! Total cost: about $10-15

bonus. lots of stick-on hooks.

Keep your stuff off the floor by buying a ton of hooks that stick to the wall. I used these to hang up my lights, calendar, medicines, etc. Make sure to find hooks that will hold the amount of weight you plan to hang and that they won’t do any permanent damage to the wall. I recommend the Command hooks. Total cost: depends on how many you need (probably $10+)
